The purpose of the dashboard
The dashboard is meant to give you a high-level overview of key analytics for your loaded data.
As you use the controls, you will see the data update in real-time.
Dashboard Widgets
Cycle Time
This widget tells you how long it takes for you to deliver your work (in days) for the 4 different percentiles of cases. This should be reflective of all the cycle time percentile lines on the Cycle Time Scatterplot chart when using the same filters.
Be aware that you can control what this chart reflects by using the filter controls for this chart.
The chart will include all of your data that's been loaded in unless you use the item filter control.
This cycle time reflects how long it took for work from entering the first checked workflow stage to exiting the last checked workflow stage in your Workflow Stages control to the right.
WIP
This widget tells you how many items are in your workflow (aka in progress) right now. This should be reflective of the number of items that are shown on the Aging Work In Progress chart when using the same filters.
Be aware that you can control what this chart reflects by using the filter controls for this chart.
By using the item filter control you can filter down to a specific set of items
By using the workflow stages control, you can choose to show the number of items in a subset of workflow stages.
Pace
All numbers in this widget are calculated averages (mean). Read about each to understand how they are calculated.
Arrival Rate
Definition: the rate at which you start work. In ActionableAgile we check to see the rate at which work enters into the first checked step of your workflow as configured in the Workflow Stages control for this chart.
Calculation basics:
We look at all the current WIP and grab the earliest start date for these items. This date will be used for the Starting Date in our calculation.
The column in the table shows our End Date for our calculation: Today, 7 days ago, or 30 days ago. The tool transforms that into a date.
We find the started dates for all items finished before the End Date and divide it by the total number of days between the Starting Date and End Date
Throughput
Definition: the rate at which you finish work. In ActionableAgile we check to see the rate at which work enters the last checked stage of your workflow as configured in the Workflow Stages control for this chart.
Calculation basics:
We look at all the current WIP and grab the end date for these items. This date will be used for the End Date in our calculation.
The column in the table shows our End Date for our calculation: Today, 7 days ago, or 30 days ago. The tool transforms that into a date.
We find the finish dates for all items finished before the End Date and divide it by the total number of days between the Starting Date and End Date.
WIP Age
...
Definition: the age of your work-in-progress. In ActionableAgile we check to see how many days it has been since the work items entered the first checked step of your workflow as configured in the Workflow Stages control for this chart.
Calculation basics:
All calculations for WIP age in this widget are from single dates in your data set as follows:
The average age of the items in progress Today is 10.03
The average age of the items in progress 7 days ago is 9.47
The average age of the items in progress 30 days ago is 4.37
The Pace: Start vs Finish chart provides information about it in the same way asthearrival and departure rates. Start is the arrivals each day. Completed is the Throughput but with monthly actuals instead of averages.
Info |
---|
Started and Completed can be toggled on and off. |
To get the average arrival rate and average throughput of the data through to today (like we had in the original dashboard), you can go to summary statistics on the CFD and grab the information in the system line there.
WIP Age
The WIP & WIP age chart tells you the total age, average age, and WIP level for each day over time. This line chart shows the change over time and reduces the need for manual work. The last point on this chart should reflect today.
This is actually a lot more useful than an average of your whole data set and tells you a much better picture of your changes in risk over time.
Info |
---|
Work-in-progress is defined as work that has entered the first checked step of your workflow but has not entered the last checked step. |
...
You see the calculated averages for those data points for the following time horizons:
...
As of Today (Anything that has been created)
...
As of Last Week (Created on or before 7 days ago)
...
Be aware that you can control what this chart reflects by using the filter controls for this chart.
By using the item filter control you can filter down to a specific set of items
By using the workflow stages control, you can choose to show the number of items in a subset of workflow stages.
This widget should show information similar to that in the Summary Statistics dialog box in the Cumulative Flow Diagram chart when using the same filters
Info |
---|
Pro TipIdeally, the arrival rate and throughput are similar. If your arrival rate is higher than your throughput, you are starting more than you finish. In that situation, you'd expect your WIP age to start increasing. This widget can give you a quick health check on your process. |
Monte Carlo: How Many
This widget tells you how many items can be finished in 30 days with different degrees of certainty. The image above is saying that there's an 85% chance that 66 items or more will be completed in 30 days. This should be reflective of what you'd see in the Monte Carlo: How Many chart when using the same filters.
Be aware that you can control what this chart reflects by using the filter controls for this chart.
By using the item filter control you can filter down to a specific set of items
By using the workflow stages control, you can redefine what completed means by unchecking workflow stages from the bottom of the list. Removing workflow stages from the top of the list does not affect the calculations.
Dashboard Controls
Date Range
The Date Range control allows you to select a specific date range for your completed items across all charts.
Selecting the dates opens a calendar window where you can choose the date range that you want to see.
There are presets to select from, such as Last 30 Days, Last Quarter, etc.
Item Filter
...
You can filter down the dots shown on this chart by choosing one or more available filters.
If you want to clear your filters so that all data is portrayed again, click the Reset button.
Workflow Stages
...
Use this control to refine the portion of the process that is used for the dashboard. Each widget may use this information differently depending on how the chart is based on works.
