Global Chart Controls

Global Chart Controls

Each chart has it's own set of controls that you can use to configure your data. If you find yourself repeating certain things over and over on each chart, it is time to explore the global chart controls.

There are four controls that are available to the right of the chart under the heading "Controls for all Charts":

  • Visible Period

  • Item Filter

  • Ideal WIP

  • Workflow Stages

When you use any of these, it will affect what you see on every chart you navigate to without the need to configure the individual charts.

When you filter down the options here, you reduce the options available in the individual chart controls. Keep reading for more information about each specific Global Chart Control.

Visible Period NEW update

With the Visible Period control, you can choose the date range that will be showing on the horizontal axis for all of your work items across all charts.

Selecting the dates opens a calendar window where you can choose the date range that you want to see.

You can either choose a static date range or a rolling period.

If you choose one of the rolling periods, the dates will update automatically over time. For example:

  • Last 30 days: Will update every day.

  • This month: Will update the end date every day, and start date when a new month starts.

  • Previous month: Will update every month.

  • This year: Will update the end date every day, and start date when a new year starts.

  • All time: This will reset the dates to the default, which is from the date the first time a work item went to In progress, until today.

To select a static date range, select them in the calendar, or in the ‘From’ and ‘To’ fields at the bottom.

You can always see if you have set a static date range or a rolling period in the header of the date picker pop-up window.

Why do I see empty spaces and additional zeros?

Don’t worry, it’s normal! When you choose a Visible Period, all days in that range are shown on the charts, including days without any data. This can result in empty areas or what may appear as leading or trailing zeros.

Can I hide those empty periods?

Yes! You can either adjust your visible period or use the date control chart on each chart to select which time period to focus on (ie, excluding periods without data).

Check our video explaining how to use the visible period and the date control chart:

Item Filter

If you would like to filter your data view by any attribute other than workflow stage, use the Item Filter control to manage what is shown in your data view. This includes some basic issue data as well as custom fields you chose to import when you loaded the Jira data.

If I choose to filter down to just Issue Type: User Story at this global level, then the Item Filter control for an individual chart will only show the User Story option under "Type". Compare the image to the right, which is an example of an individual chart control after the global filter has been used, with the unfiltered global control image above it.

Ideal WIP NEW

Use the Ideal WIP control to define your target amount of work in progress across all charts. You can set a minimum and/or maximum WIP value.

WIP Run Chart

When you do this, supported charts (such as the WIP Run Chart & Dashboard) will show your ideal WIP as either

  1. a line (for a single value) or a shaded band (for a range)
    or,

  2. as text that informs you if you’re inside or outside your chosen ideal range

This helps you quickly see when your current WIP is below, within, or above your preferred range.

Why this matters

Defining an ideal WIP helps teams keep a steady flow. By showing your target as a line or band on supported charts, you can quickly see when you’re under, within, or over your preferred range and adjust accordingly.

Workflow Stages

If you would like to filter your data view by workflow stage at the global level so that none of your charts can use that workflow stage, deselect the workflow stages you'd like to exclude.

If I choose to filter out a workflow stage at this global level, then the Workflow Stages control for an individual chart will not show that particular workflow stage. Compare the image to the right, which is an example of an individual chart control after the workflow stage "Backlog" has been filtered out at the global level, with the unfiltered global control image above it.
